Not only is it important to take care of your teeth, but it is important to also take care of the things that hold your teeth in place… your gums!
Periodontal Cleanings
At the dentist, people are familiar with professional cleanings for the teeth using the special toothbrush and the special toothpaste. Periodontal cleanings happen at the dentist and it is pretty much the same thing. These special cleanings are advised by the dentist if the plaque and calculus build up underneath your gums is excessive.
If you experience a lot of plaque and tartar underneath your gums there is a possibility that you have developed periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a disease of the gums, there are different stages of periodontal disease and they all stem from how well you take care of your teeth.
The different stages of periodontal disease are gingivitis, slight periodontal disease, moderate periodontal disease, and advanced periodontal disease. Gingivitis is the only stage of periodontal disease that can be reversed because it hasn’t yet reached the jaw bone. Once the disease has reached the jaw bone it can eat away at it and then there is a possibility of tooth loss.
It is very important that if you have gingivitis to do all that you can to keep your teeth and your gums clean to prevent the disease from worsening.
Scaling and Root Planing
If you are someone who has an excess of calculus and plaque build-up under your gums, it would be suggested by Dr. Chowdhary to have scaling and root planing done. This is the process of cleaning underneath your gums.
The calculus and plaque underneath your gums have been building up over time and have hardened so it is very difficult to remove it just by regular dental cleaning. All dental hygienists are qualified and trained to clean and remove the calculus from your gums. To do this the hygienist needs to use certain tools to remove it properly.
These instruments include some small special hand-held instruments that are used to scale and scrape off the calculus. The other user is the ultrasonic scaler, this instrument uses high vibration energy and water that blasts the calculus into smaller parts, making it easier to remove.
Periodontal disease isn’t something that you want to mess with or take lightly. If it progresses it is possible that it can start to deteriorate your jaw bone and cause tooth loss.
